The agriculture and farming sectors in South Africa remain some of the most contentious with many concerns around commercial viability, property ownership rights and the ability to create sustainable business models.
While the sectors face a number of headwinds, new technology and innovation mean that South Africa can tackle a number of challenges including input costs for food and feed production, the creation of sustainable food channels for the most vulnerable and the opportunity to create meaningful employment.
For this reason, we remain excited about the opportunities for investors in the sector and keep our eyes on global trends that can stimulate investment here.
In this TEDx talk, entrepreneur Chris Bush talks about some of these opportunities. In 2008 he built the first of its kind facility in Abbotsford that cooks manure from a lot of farm animals, and supplies the natural gas that comes into your homes and businesses in the area. He has lead tours across Sweden to learn, taught how to do food systems in the Middle East, and scoured the planet for the best solutions to the global grand challenges of humanity, food, energy, water and education. Most recently he began work with a world leading think tank called XPRIZE, to design competitions so we can all work together to solve these threats.
